The President is in a serious slump. The latest numbers from Rasmussen show his approval rating at a new low of 45%, versus 54% who disapprove.
The President has never had numbers quite this bad, though he came close the first week of September (45-53).
His numbers are only this high for one reason. According to Gallup, 91% of blacks still approve of the job he’s doing. 91%? I predict we’ll never see that number below 80% no matter what happens.
Where he can still lose significant support is in the youth vote. Gallup has this group at 61% approval currently. It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that the bump among this age group has to do with the “hip” factor. A few more months and this will be wearing as thin on the young as it is on everyone else.
Why does it matter? Obama already showed that he had no coattails in New Jersey and Virginia. Further erosion hardly matters.
Why it really matters is that the President and Congress have staked everything on this clunker of a health reform bill. Their only hope of climbing out of this pit is a big win. Any big win will do, but the sooner the better.
Expect to see a lot more deals like the Louisiana purchase in the coming weeks. This is no longer about health reform, it’s increasingly about the survival of the Democratic majority.
