On July 14th I submitted a post to Big Journalism about Newsweek’s downplaying of the New Black Panther story. After some light editing it was posted early on the 15th (I posted a slightly different version here at VS later that afternoon). Big Journalism contributor John Nolte wrote a follow up which included some kind words for my original piece. I thanked him via Twitter and figured that was the [...]

John and I are both in Las Vegas at the RightOnline conference. So blogging will be a little lighter than usual. If you are also at the conference drop us an email or please come up and say hello if you happen to see us. In the meantime, enjoy one of the funniest ads currently running on TV. It had John and I cracking up last night anyway.

Well, if you’re a regular reader you’ve probably noticed by now that the blog has changed overnight. After five years, we’ve decided it’s time to place some ads on the site. We’re doing this, primarily, because we plan to move to a new server soon and it will cost double or triple what we’ve been paying. The ads should cover that cost and allow us to handle the traffic spikes [...]

Was going to put something up about this on the weekend, but didn’t get around to it. I come from a family of hippie sensibilities. I was not allowed to have toy guns as a child and I have to confess to always feeling very uncomfortable around guns as a result. But recently, as in the last 2-3 years, I’ve thought more and more about how safe we really are [...]

We’re #178 this month at Wikio, which is the first time we’ve broken into the top 200. That’s not the Politics category unfortunately, just the “general” category. I have written Wikio twice asking them to re-categorize us and so far no response. If we were ranked in Politics we would currently be #56. Not too shabby considering how many of the top 20 political blogs are professional (i.e. paid staff) [...]

Wow, that was quick! We passed 2 million hits on November 9, 2009. It took us almost exactly a year to get there from 1 million. We hoped we could reach 3 million by this 4th of July, but we figured that was pretty optimistic. Well, I guess it’s time to be an optimist. From 1-2 million in a year and from 2-3 million in under 7 months. Kudos and [...]

The vast right-wing conspiracy at work – lol. From VS to the Glenn Beck Show in one day: Watch the latest news video at video.foxnews.com No one does a better job educating their audience and connecting the dots on complex story-lines than Glenn Beck, and he deserves a ton of credit for exposing the radical agenda of ACORN and others on the left. I had forgotten about that old clip [...]

I received a note yesterday saying that our RSS feed was broken and had been for some time. Not sure when this happened, but it turns out to be a somewhat common problem on the WordPress platform. Sure enough, there was a blank line appearing at the top of our XML. I spent a couple hours working on it last night and it seemed nothing I tried was working. This [...]

This is pretty cool – last night Bill O’Reilly and Megyn Kelly discussed the video clip we found and posted of Goodwin Liu discussing reparations. Unfortunately the only clip available seems to be this one from our pals at Media Matters: Sadly, Megyn Kelly has been defending Obama’s nomination of Liu since it was first announced, so her comments here are not a surprise. I think it would be reasonable [...]

Mark Levin is pretty much my favorite talk radio host so it is always a thrill when he features an audio or video clip that we discovered. Here is Levin on his show this afternoon playing our clip of Steny Hoyer from last night: [audio:http://www.verumserum.com/media/2010/03/Levin-audio.mp3|titles=Levin audio] Levin has been at the forefront of this issue since the news first broke that House Democrats were considering using this “deem and pass” [...]

Yesterday, Morgen and I were interviewed for a documentary on new media and how it is changing the news business. The final show will be about 100 minutes long, of which our talk about blogging in general and the Sotomayor nomination in particular will be just a fraction. The show is being produced by a Japanese news company that makes multiple versions for sale to places like PBS and the BBC. [...]

If you tried to get on in the last hour you may have found some haywire behavior. When I tried to click on VS from anywhere my browser would ask if I wanted to download the file. Huh? I’ve upgraded to the latest iteration (which was really just a bug fix edition). It appears whatever malicious code was causing this has been removed. If anyone else has had a recent [...]

Doug Ross Journal, which I read every day, has given out some blog awards for 2009. To our surprise, they gave VS the “The ‘Jim Rice’ Award given to Most Promising New Investigative Journalist.” Probably the coolest part is all the other great blogs that won awards: Michelle Malkin, Big Government, Ace of Spades, Hot Air, Gateway Pundit, The Corner, Jawa Report, Power Line, Jammie Wearing Fool, Patterico and many [...]

This was going to be one of those ponderous year-in-review posts talking about how a couple of regular guys blogging in their spare time had a real impact on the national debate in 2009. With self-congratulatory references to our work related to healthcare reform, Justice Sotomayor’s nomination, and the resignation of Van Jones among other things. But I’m not going to subject you to that. (At least not any more [...]

Nate Silver wrote a post yesterday titled “The Public Option Fight May Not Have Been Winnable.” Nate argues that there was never enough support for the public option to suspect it could pass, therefore there’s no real sense in being disappointed that it hasn’t. To support this view he offers quotes from four Senators speaking in opposition to the public option. You can click over to read the quotes, but [...]

Sorry things are a little slow today. Morgen is out of town, Cindy is ill and I’m facing the last 5 weeks of the semester at grad school. I will pick it up tomorrow. Speaking of pick me ups, my 8 year-old daughter has recently learned what blogs are. She is very impressed that her dad has one, especially after she learned that a few of her friend’s parents read [...]

We passed 2 million hits today almost exactly one year after we hit the one million mark. I realize that’s small potatoes by some standards, but we continue to grow every month and the trend is looking good. I also believe we’ve had a vastly disproportionate impact in national debates this year. We put together this page highlighting VS in the Media. Is there any blog twice our size that [...]

As John mentioned earlier this week, we are both attending the Western CPAC conference in Newport Beach which starts tonight and runs through tomorrow. We were granted the honor of being part of the official “bloggers row“, and so although I honestly am just happy to be here, we will be providing coverage of the event here on VS. Tim Pawlenty is the key note speaker tonight, and it looks like [...]

This weekend, Morgen and I will be attending the Western Conservative Political Action Conference, known as Western CPAC for short. We were planning to attend anyway but after exchanging a few e-mails about the possibility of a blog hook-up we were invited to be full participants. We literally will have a seat at the table and even a chance to interview some of the attendees. It’s quite a roster: Bruce [...]
